Director, Taxation

We are looking for a Director, Taxation to join our high performing Taxation department to assist with leading the Income Tax Reporting function for The Canada Life Assurance Company (“CLA”), a Canadian Life Insurance company, and its Canadian subsidiaries.

 

As a Director, Taxation, your role is responsible for the oversight, review and analysis of quarterly and year-end tax provisions under IFRS basis, as well as the related Canadian tax compliance matters. Reporting to the AVP, Canada Taxation, you will oversee investigating, researching, and analyzing income tax issues for the purpose of tax accounting, tax audits, special transactions and/or tax planning.

 

 

What you will do:

 

  • Oversee and review the quarterly and year-end tax provisions under IFRS for CLA and its Canadian subsidiaries.
  • Plan and manage the Canadian corporate income tax compliance for CLA and its Canadian subsidiaries.
  • Manage and analyze internal reporting deliverables such as annual tax budget, reporting to Canadian life insurance regulators, and internal controls over financial reporting processes.
  • Analyze, research and document tax considerations that arose from the review of the above provisions and returns.
  • Monitor Canadian legislation changes and document the impact on our companies.
  • Oversee the compliance for new income tax rules such as Canadian Pillar 2 and excess interest and financing expense limitation (“EIFEL”) reporting.  
  • Development, coaching and training of staff members.
  • Analyze new or changing accounting standards, special transactions, and tax planning opportunities.
  • Document Canadian tax accounting policies
  • Assist in responding to tax audit queries including investigating, researching and analyzing the tax issues and information required 

 

What you will bring:

 

  • Completion of a professional accounting designation (or equivalent)
  • Completion or enrolled in the CPA In-Depth Tax Course
  • 6-10 years of experience in Canadian taxation (Canadian insurance taxation experience is advantageous)
  • Exceptional decision making, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple demands and competing priorities to achieve required results
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and also work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Passion for developing others and developing a high performance culture
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience in SAP and/or Longview Tax is an asset

 

The base salary for this position is between  $89,800 - $166,300 annually.  This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).  If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
