The Underwriting Training and Development Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing underwriting training programs to enhance the knowledge, skills, and performance of underwriters. The role focuses on developing training materials, conducting workshops and training schools, ensuring compliance with underwriting policies, and fostering continuous professional development within the underwriting department.
What you will do:
Training Program Development & Delivery
- Develop, implement, and manage underwriting training programs tailored to different levels of underwriters (junior, mid-level, and senior).
- Deliver training sessions through various formats, including classroom instruction, webinars, e-learning modules, and hands-on workshops.
- Create training materials such as manuals, guides, case studies, and assessments.
Underwriting Knowledge & Skills Development
- Provide specialized training on underwriting principles, risk assessment, policy guidelines, and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct technical training on underwriting software, data analysis tools, and risk evaluation models.
- Ensure that underwriters are up to date with industry trends, new regulations, and changes in company policies.
Onboarding & Continuous Education
- Lead the underwriting training for new hires to ensure a smooth transition into the role.
- Establish ongoing professional development initiatives to upskill underwriters and improve decision-making.
- Organize refresher courses, workshops, and certifications for underwriting teams.
Performance Assessment & Coaching
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through assessments, feedback, and underwriting performance metrics.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to underwriters to enhance their technical and analytical skills as well as co-signing underwriter files.
- Identify knowledge gaps and tailor training solutions accordingly.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all underwriting training aligns with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with compliance and risk management teams to update training content as needed.
- Promote ethical underwriting practices and adherence to risk management principles.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with underwriting managers, senior underwriters, and NB Ops teams to align training programs with business goals.
- Liaise with external training providers, professional bodies, and industry experts to enhance training offerings.
- Support the development of career progression pathways for underwriters within the organization.
What you will bring:
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and insurance policies.
- Familiarity with underwriting systems, data analysis tools, and risk evaluation techniques.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
Training & Development Skills:
- Experience in instructional design, curriculum development, and adult learning methodologies.
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage and educate diverse audiences.
- Ability to create effective training materials and e-learning content.
Other Skills:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical and creative thinking abilities.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback.
- Highly organized with strong project management skills.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree, or a related job experience.
- Experience in Individual Insurance Underwriting.
- Professional Insurance qualifications (e.g., FLMI, FALU etc.) .
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in underwriting, training, or a related role.
- Experience in developing and delivering training programs in an insurance environment.
Additional Information:
- This role may require occasional travel to different office locations for training sessions.
- The candidate should have a passion for learning and development and a commitment to fostering underwriting excellence.

The base salary for this position is between $96,200 - $146,200 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc). If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
