The National Accounts New Business Underwriting team is looking for an experienced and energetic underwriter to help us achieve growth in the large case market.
As an Underwriting Account Manager on the New Business Underwriting team, you would be responsible for performing all underwriting functions related to:
- new business quotes received from the National Consultant Houses across Canada (excluding Quebec)
- assist on new business quotes received from the National Consultant Houses across Canada (excluding Quebec) with the Senior Underwriting Account Manager to gain exposure and experience
- involvement in marketing exercises for existing cases with 1000-5000 lives (excluding Quebec)
You will join a team which combines creativity, collaboration and strategic thinking to develop a compelling proposal that will help Canada Life win more and keep more in this exciting space.
What you will do:
- Assess risk on complex cases (size, financial arrangement, profile) to determine if the client is a good fit for Canada Life by considering industry, economic outlook, administrative requirements, financial arrangements, and historical experience
- Develop compelling and financially sound proposals including pricing, funding arrangements, guarantees and investment
- Identify creative pricing approaches and demonstrate the advantages to senior management
- Provide a detailed explanation of our pricing methodology and provide the reasons behind our decisions
- Provide thoughtful responses to the underwriting questions in the Request for Proposal (RFP)
- Support the implementation of successful new business clients and support the transition of new business to the renewal underwriting teams
What you will bring:
- Minimum 3 years of underwriting experience (or equivalent)
- Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- In depth knowledge of Group Benefits products, pricing and funding arrangements
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills – Applies a structured approach to identify and analyze options including internal and external risks and impacts, seeks diverse perspectives and uses insights for decision making
- Creative problem solver – Solution focused, can think outside the box to come up with customer focused solutions, challenges the status quo and courageously explores what’s possible
- Solid communication skills, both verbal and written – Clear, concise and articulate, communicates professionally at the right level for the audience
- Excellent negotiation skills – Ability to reach an agreement with a mutually beneficial outcome while avoiding arguments and maintaining relationships
- Execution focused – Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle changing priorities and fluctuating workloads, ability to manage multiple tasks and demanding deadlines
- Relationship building – Actively works to build constructive relationships both internally and externally
- Growth mindset – Thrives on challenge, takes ownership of own development, sees mistakes as learning opportunities

The base salary for this position is between $52,800.00 - $97,700.00 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
