We are looking for a Manager, Taxation to assist leading the Audit & Defense function for Great-West Lifeco Inc. and its Canadian subsidiaries.

 

As a Manager, Taxation you will be primarily responsible for the management and coordination of the Canadian income tax audits of Great-West Life Inc. and its Canadian subsidiaries (including The Canada Life Assurance Company, a multi-national life insurer).  

 

Reporting to the AVP, the Manager, Taxation will also assist in the analysis of special transactions and tax planning matters for Canadian income tax purposes.

 

What you will do:

  • Liaise with federal and provincial tax authorities and manage the progress of the tax audits.
  • Research and analyze tax issues and prepare/review responses to tax audit queries on a timely basis.
  • Review/update and document uncertain tax positions for the purposes of financial reporting under IFRS quarterly.
  • Track, analyze and record reassessments & relevant tax attributes, and prepare/review current tax accounts reconciliations for the purposes of financial reporting under IFRS quarterly.
  • Communicate with senior management and external advisors on tax matters.
  • Coach and train staff.
  • Analyze, research and document tax considerations on special transactions and tax planning matters including identifying, quantifying, and documenting Canadian tax risks, developing solutions and/or filing positions, and liaise with other departments.
  • Research and analyze tax questions from other non-tax departments.
  • Provide support to, and/or collaborate with the Tax Reporting function team in the review/analysis of specific tax issues/considerations/filing positions.

 

 

What you will bring

  • 4+ years of experience in Canadian taxation. Previous tax experience within the Canadian insurance or financial services industry is preferred but not required.
  • CPA and university degree in accounting/business and/or taxation.
  • Completion of or currently enrolled to complete the CPA In-Depth Tax Course.
  • Strong problem-solving/analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience in SharePoint and Longview (Tax Module) is an asset.
  • Ability to delegate work to and develop staff.

The base salary for this position is between $76,400- $ 141,400 annually.  This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).  If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
