Vice-President International Tax

The Vice‑President, International Tax is a senior leader within Great‑West Lifeco’s Global Tax function, accountable for shaping and executing the company’s international tax strategy across jurisdictions. This role provides strategic leadership on cross‑border tax planning, oversees international tax compliance and reporting, and ensures robust tax risk management for the organization’s global operations in various jurisdictions.
Operating with an enterprise mindset, the VP, International Tax partners closely with senior Finance, Legal, Actuarial, and business leaders to enable sustainable growth, manage risk, and support regulatory confidence across the global footprint.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute complex international tax structuring across all jurisdictions, integrating cross‑border and global considerations; including partnering closely with finance, legal, local tax, and key business stakeholders to ensure that international business transactions are conducted in a tax efficient manner with minimized tax risks.
- Oversee global transfer pricing to reduce tax risk; ensuring strong business rationale and pricing support for international transactions is produced and that quality and consistency of transfer pricing documentation is achieved across jurisdictions.
- Lead, develop, and inspire a high‑performing international tax team; ensuring the team is appropriately resourced with skilled, qualified professionals.
- Evaluate and manage tax risk across relevant entities; ensuring tax risk controls and governance standards are consistently applied. Maintain transparency and alignment with senior tax leadership on all material reporting and compliance matters.
- Assess emerging tax legislation, regulatory developments, and case law in Canada and internationally, including OECD tax developments, translating implications into actionable guidance.
- Build and maintain strong, constructive relationships with tax authorities across all relevant jurisdictions; enabling resolution of controversial tax matters through collaboration and credibility.
- Ensure Canadian foreign affiliate related tax analysis is kept up to date for purposes of supporting international transactions and tax authority audits.
- Collaborate on international aspects of OECD global minimum tax rules.
- Oversee Canadian foreign affiliate and cross‑border related‑party tax compliance to ensure proper completion and filing (e.g., T1134, T106, Country-by-Country Reporting, etc.).
Qualifications & Experience
- Corporate Tax Professional with 10+ years of senior tax experience in public accounting, legal firm, or equivalent industry experience
- Extensive experience in international taxation including cross-border corporate structuring, mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance transactions, and investment structuring for large multi-national organizations in the financial services industry
- Demonstrated thought leadership and ability to drive complex, multi stakeholder initiatives
- Strong verbal and written communication, confident and persuasive with senior executive stakeholders / audiences
