We are seeking an experienced and energetic leader to join the National Accounts New Business Underwriting team. In this role, you’ll help us achieve growth in the National Accounts market through strong leadership and the thoughtful evolution of our pricing strategies.
You will be joining a team that combines creativity, collaboration and strategic thinking to develop compelling financial proposals that will help Canada Life win more business in this exciting space.
What you will do
- Oversee a team of Underwriters and Analysts performing all functions related to new business quotes received from the National Consultant Houses across Canada (excluding Quebec).
- Support your team in assessing risk on complex cases (size, financial arrangement, profile), considering industry, economic outlook, administrative requirements, financial arrangements, and historical experience
- Guide your team through the development of compelling, creative and financially sound proposals including pricing, funding arrangements, guarantees and investments
- Provide oversight of the responses to underwriting questions in Requests for Proposal (RFPs), ensuring their thoughtfulness and comprehensiveness
- Work in partnership with internal stakeholders in Sales and Pricing on specific quotes and to evolve our pricing strategy in response to the market
- Develop and maintain strong market intelligence regarding our competitors and how their approaches to new business pricing differ from ours
- Provide ongoing insights to leaders and partners in the Sales organization regarding the status of cases in our pipeline, general workflow, opportunities lost and more
- Ongoing enhancement of training, processes, and tools used by the team
What you will bring
- Minimum 5 years of Group Benefits underwriting experience; in-depth knowledge of Group Benefits products, pricing and funding arrangements
- Reliability Status security clearance - this is a personnel security status that is required before an employee can gain access to Protected B information, assets or work sites as outlined by the Government of Canada website
- Post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong leadership skills – A demonstrated aptitude for talent development and creating a growth mindset across a team
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills – Applies a structured approach to identify and analyze options including internal and external risks and impacts, seeks diverse perspectives and uses insights for decision making
- Creative problem solver – Solution focused, can think outside the box to come up with customer focused solutions, challenges the status quo and courageously explores what’s possible
- Solid communication skills, both verbal and written – Clear, concise and articulate, communicates professionally at the right level for the audience
- Excellent negotiation skills – Ability to reach an agreement with a mutually beneficial outcome while avoiding arguments and maintaining relationships
- Relationship building – Actively works to build constructive relationships both internally and externally

The base salary for this position is between $76,400 - $141,400 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc). If you are selected to move forward in our recruitment process, your recruiter will be able to discuss additional details of our total rewards program with you.
